Background

Mazda Motor Corporation is a global icon. Its representative name, which comes from Ahura Mazda (God of Light), illustrates the mission of this Japanese multinational automaker: to brighten up the perception of compact vehicles. From its humble beginnings as a company that was selling three-wheel pickup trucks, Mazda became a successful and growing car manufacturer.

“We love cars and want people to enjoy fulfilling lives through cars”. This is the corporate vision of Mazda. In order to fulfill it, Mazda needed a partner who could provide automotive technical and marketing translations that could support new products launches and ongoing updates.


Challenges

Our story began in 2007, with Mazda CX-7, a mid-size crossover SUV from Mazda, when a complex user manual for this model was sent our way to be translated and localized. From this very first project, other projects followed and our story alongside Mazda continued until today, with the translation and localization of different products.

Diversity

This is the word that best describes our collaboration with Mazda. Not only did we have to translate different text typologies (catalogs, user manuals, service manuals, warranty books, marketing brochures, technical leaflets), but we also localized Mazda’s application and offered a variety of services connected to translation. Mazda is one of our clients for whom we produce documents in a publishable format, and even deliver to their stores and dealers.

Consistency

In terms of preferred terminology across all documents, consistency was another key element we had to take care of. Most of their documents were similar, but had specific elements pertaining to various models. Another challenge was to ensure high quality across languages, to achieve excellence in terms of accuracy, grammar, style and, of course, to make sure all documents were consistent and respected the global terminology of Mazda.

Solutions

In order to deliver the target-documents in a publishable format, we first implemented our three-staged translation process: translation – revision – proofreading. Each of these stages were handled by a different linguist, so that we could ensure high quality of the final product. Once the translation was finished, we had to take care of the layout of the documents. Afterwards, a final quality check was implemented, and most importantly,  the documents were published and delivered to the target-audience.

 

As we had to ensure consistency across complex target-documents, we tested and trained teams of linguists for each and every language combination. These teams produce accurate and consistent translations. Then we created glossaries and translation memories and with every new task, we updated them with new terms. This allowed us to ensure consistency and to maximize efficiency across all automotive technical and marketing translations we have been in charge of since then.

The translation of user manuals for Mazda cars has not been a simple process, due to Mazda's specific terminology and the great volumes to translate at a time. It would have been difficult for us to know where to ask and to find vendors for the various tasks involved in releasing a brochure but Octopus team simply took the burden off our shoulders and handled all stages, still consulting us for every major decision.
